CITY 100: Away wins and Zinchenko’s trophy mishap.

The latest instalment in our 100-themed summer feature...

69Zinchenko’s trophy fail

On Sunday 6 May, Manchester City lifted the Premier League trophy. It was a gloriously sunny day in Manchester, music was playing and the Etihad atmosphere was euphoric as the crowd watched Pep Guardiola’s squad receive their winner’s medals.

Despite all the records that had been broken, there was one particular moment during that famous day which sent Twitter into meltdown.

The squad took to the stage, jumping around and celebrating a record-breaking campaign – and in that moment an enthusiastic Oleksandr Zinchenko somehow managed to send the prestigious trophy tumbling towards the Etihad Stadium turf.

Of course, the trophy was completely unharmed but Zinchenko’s facial expression as the trophy fell in - what seemed like – slow-motion was an absolute picture and as you can imagine his team-mates didn’t let him forget it!

Will Zinchenko ever live that down? Probably not! But it would be unfair for that little ‘incident’ to overshadow the impact he’s made throughout his debut season with City.

After joining the Blues back in the summer of 2016, the 21-year-old spent a season on loan with PSV Eindhoven before returning to make 14 appearances for Pep’s City.

The Ukrainian was a key feature in our Carabao Cup success, and contributed his efforts in eight Premier League clashes in the opening months of 2018.

Still though, that mishap moment will probably go down in City history – all in jest, of course!

70Away success

Records just kept tumbling game-by-game which is what made our 2017/18 Premier League campaign so astonishing.

Our home run was impressive, but Pep’s men were just as lethal on the road. In December we equalled Chelsea’s 2008 record of 11 consecutive away victories with the win at Newcastle but we were denied posting a new milestone with a 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve.

Speaking after the game, Pep stated that the team wouldn’t win every game but stressed the importance of remainly mentally strong, which City most certainly did throughout the season.

"We are going to lose games as players will get tired," Pep explained during his post-match press conference. "We have problems with [Benjamin] Mendy and other players, we just have to recover well and remain mentally strong.

"That is normal in football, now we set a record in Premier League but the next one we will try to beat.

City missed out on just three Premier League away wins, with Palace and Burnley holding us to draws plus a narrow and frustrating defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. That’s 16 away wins, the final victory sealed on the closing day of the season with Gabriel Jesus’ late goal, which -you guessed it – is yet another (!) Premier League record for Guardiola’s side.
