The sight of our diminutive but effervescent Portuguese playmaker taking the game to our opponents with the shackles off stands as the very essence of Pep Guardiola’s brilliant and beguiling Manchester City.
If Pep is the composer, more often not Bernardo operates as the on-field orchestrator, his natural talent, unquenchable spirit and iron-clad commitment helping elicit the very best out of his colleagues too.
There’s also a joy and freedom about Bernardo that has helped establish him as one of the most pivotal and hugely popular figures over the course of City’s astonishing success these past few years.

Few will ever forget his quite brilliant brace against Real Madrid in last season’s magical 4-0 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg win – a display that many observers hailed as one of the finest sever delivered by an English side.
He also conjured up a number of special strikes in helping City carve out victories at Manchester United down the years while it was Bernardo’s assist that set up Rodrigo’s winner in last season’s Champions League final win against Inter.
All told, 14 trophies now adorn his trophy cabinet while last season, along the way to helping the Club claim our historic Treble, Bernardo also achieved the impressive individual landmark of chalking up his 300th game for City.
In many ways too, Bernardo stands as the very embodiment of what Pep looks for in a player.
Rather than being pigeon-holed as a player who operates in one specific position, Bernardo stands as a team player in every sense of the word.

“I have been lucky to coach some very good players for Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He is one of the best players I ever trained in my life, ever. He is something special as a football player,” Pep declared earlier this year.
“He is a player who you say is going to play in that position and you do not have to say anything else.
“Bernardo is a football player. He can play everywhere because he understands the game perfectly and every action with and without the ball.
“He is so, so important.
“If you want statistics, you can go to big data and write a big article about that.
“But there are some things that people don’t come to in the data. It’s something that is unique.
“And Bernardo is unique.”
