สัญญาฉบับใหม่นี้จะยิ่งตอกย้ำสายสัมพันธ์อันลึกซึ้งระหว่างแข้งเยาวชนที่เกิดในเมืองเบอรี่อย่างลูอิสกับสโมสร
ลูอิสเข้ามาสู่อะคาเดมีของซิตี้ตั้งแต่อายุเพียง 8 ปี เขาก้าวหน้าผ่านแต่ละระดับอายุของทีม ก่อนจะก้าวขึ้นสู่ทีมชุดใหญ่ได้สำเร็จในฤดูกาลคว้า “ทริปเปิลแชมป์” 2022/23
นับตั้งแต่นั้น ดาวเตะวัย 20 ปีก็ได้ยืนหยัดเป็นหนึ่งในกำลังสำคัญของทีมชุดใหญ่ภายใต้การคุมทัพของเป๊ป กวาร์ดิโอลา
แม้จะเริ่มต้นสร้างชื่อในตำแหน่งแบ็กขวา แต่ในระยะหลังลูอิสก็โชว์ฟอร์มได้น่าประทับใจในหลากหลายบทบาท โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการเล่นเป็นกองกลางลูกผสม
จนถึงตอนนี้ ริโก้ลงสนามไปแล้ว 97 นัดให้กับทีมชุดใหญ่ พร้อมทำได้ 5 ประตู
ตลอดเส้นทางที่ผ่านมา เขามีส่วนช่วยให้แมนฯ ซิตี้คว้าแชมป์มาแล้ว 7 รายการ ประกอบด้วย พรีเมียร์ลีก 2 สมัย, เอฟเอ คัพ, ยูฟ่า แชมเปียนส์ลีก, ยูฟ่า ซูเปอร์คัพ, ฟีฟ่า คลับ เวิลด์คัพ และคอมมูนิตี ชิลด์
เขายังได้ก้าวไปติดทีมชาติอังกฤษในทุกระดับตั้งแต่รุ่นอายุไม่เกิน 18 ปีขึ้นมา และจนถึงตอนนี้ลงสนามให้ทีมชาติชุดใหญ่ไปแล้ว 5 นัด
เมื่อกล่าวถึงสัญญาใหม่ ลูอิสเผยว่าเขาภาคภูมิใจอย่างยิ่งที่ได้มอบอนาคตระยะยาวให้กับแมนฯ ซิตี้
“แมนเชสเตอร์ ซิตี้ คือทุกสิ่งสำหรับผม ดังนั้นการได้รับโอกาสให้เซ็นสัญญาใหม่ครั้งนี้ ถือเป็นช่วงเวลาที่พิเศษมากทั้งสำหรับตัวผมและครอบครัว” ลูอิสกล่าว
“ผมยังคงพัฒนาและเติบโตขึ้นในฐานะนักเตะ และผมรู้ว่าการได้ทำงานร่วมกับเป๊ป ทีมสตาฟฟ์โค้ช และเพื่อนร่วมทีมที่ยอดเยี่ยมของเรา จะช่วยให้ผมก้าวหน้าและเก่งขึ้นไปอีก”
“ผมใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่ในชีวิตอยู่กับสโมสรแห่งนี้ ซิตี้คือทุกอย่างสำหรับผม ดังนั้นการได้อยู่ต่อไปนานขึ้นทำให้ผมมีความสุขอย่างเหลือเชื่อ”
“มันเป็นเกียรติและสิทธิพิเศษอย่างแท้จริงที่ได้เป็นตัวแทนของสโมสรทุก ๆ วัน และได้ลงเล่นต่อหน้าแฟนบอลที่สุดยอดของเราที่คอยสนับสนุนผมมาโดยตลอด
ผมจะทุ่มเททุกอย่างเพื่อช่วยทีมคว้าความสำเร็จมากขึ้นทั้งในฤดูกาลนี้และในอนาคต และด้วยขุมกำลังระดับเวิลด์คลาสที่เรามีอยู่ ผมตื่นเต้นมากกับสิ่งที่รออยู่ข้างหน้าของสโมสร”
ด้านผู้อำนวยการฟุตบอล ฮูโก้ วียานา กล่าวเช่นกันว่า เขารู้สึกยินดีอย่างยิ่งที่ได้เห็นลูอิสฝากอนาคตระยะยาวไว้กับแมนฯ ซิตี้
“ริโก้คือสิ่งที่เรามุ่งหวังจะเป็นที่แมนเชสเตอร์ ซิตี้ และเราดีใจมากที่เขาได้เซ็นสัญญาใหม่” วียานากล่าว
“เขาเป็นนักเตะที่มีพรสวรรค์สูง และแม้เพิ่งอายุ 20 ปี แต่ก็สั่งสมประสบการณ์ไว้มากมาย เขายังเต็มไปด้วยความกระหายที่จะเรียนรู้และพัฒนาตัวเอง ทัศนคติของเขาเป็นเลิศ และเป็นแบบอย่างที่เราต้องการจากนักเตะดาวรุ่ง”

Upwardly mobile
If one were to chart Rico Lewis’s progress at Manchester City since making his first team breakthrough it would be a graph that shows a continual upwards curve.
For if ever a player helped personify the phrase if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, then surely it’s the Bury-born Academy graduate.
His burgeoning talent and ability were already evident from an early age.
So much so that Rico was fast-tracked into City’s Under-18s at the age of 15 before then going on to captain the side to Under-18 Premier League North title glory in the 2021/22 season.
Lewis was subsequently included in the City squad that went on a two-week long summer tour to the United States in the summer of 2022 where he made a vivid and lasting impression on Pep Guardiola and his coaching team.
Evidence of that came when Rico was subsequently named on the bench for the opening game of the 2022/23 Premier League season at West Ham.
Six days later he was afforded his senior debut, coming off the bench in a 4-0 win against Bournemouth.
Having formally become part of the senior squad, Rico went from strength to strength across a season that saw City create football history as we secured the Treble of league, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
All told, he went on to make 23 appearances across all competitions, playing his own key role as Guardiola’s side entered the pantheon of true footballing legends.
The advent of the 2023/24 campaign saw Lewis continue to make huge professional strides.
He was part of the City squad that quickly followed up that Treble triumph by claiming the 2023 UEFA Super Cup in the same month that also saw him pen a long-term contract.
Lewis continued to prosper and also demonstrated his tactical versatility and flexibility with Guardiola often utilising him in a hybrid role that saw him marry his defensive duties alongside operating further forward in midfield to impressive effect.
More success followed in December of 2023, as City were crowned FIFA Club World Champions in Saudi Arabia, Lewis featuring to great acclaim in midfield during the showpiece final where Guardiola’s side overcame Fluminense 4-0 in Jeddah.
Lewis then more than played his part in helping the Club chalk up yet more English history with the 2023/24 campaign seeing City become the first-ever men’s side to win four titles in a row.
Along the way, Lewis has also developed the happy knack of establishing a penchant for scoring in quite spectacular fashion.
His maiden senior strike was an unforgettable effort in a 3-1 Champions League win over Sevilla at the Etihad in November 2022 and was one that - at just 17 years and 346 days of age - saw him become the youngest player ever to score on their first UCL start.

The following campaign saw Lewis register his maiden Premier League goals – ironically against Crystal Palace both home and away – once again in thrilling fashion.
Two more equally memorable efforts followed last term – the first away at Palace once more before a stunning early effort at Wembley set City en-route to last April’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest.
Alongside that fine progress at Club level, Lewis has also made huge strides in the international arena.
Having been capped by England at Under-16, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, Rico was subsequently afforded his maiden senior cap in a 1-1 EURO 2024 qualifier away to Macedonia in November 2023.
He has since gone on to win five caps all told for the Three Lions.
Now, with his new long-term contract secured, Rico will be focused to attaining even greater heights for City and on the international stage.
